Empowering Voices- Regional Advocacy to End Gender-Based Violence in Ameya and Elfeta LRPs!

Empowering Voices!

Gender-Based Violence remains one of the most persistent social challenges in South West Shoa and neighboring West Shoa Zones. Abduction, rape, and early marriage continue to rob women and girls of their dignity, safety, and potential. Recognizing the urgency, Ameya and Elfeta LRPs have launched a regional advocacy initiative to confront GBV at its roots, many of which lie in conflict, insecurity, and entrenched gender norms.

Built on a collaborative approach, the initiative engages government institutions, civil society, community-based organizations, religious and traditional leaders, Abba Gedas, Hadha Sinkes, youth groups, and Women Watch Groups/Forums. Together, they drive advocacy campaigns, social movements, and inclusive dialogues that challenge harmful practices and promote justice.

On October 21, 2025, Ambo City hosted a regional advocacy workshop jointly organized by the two LRPs. The event brought together 118 participants (32 women and 86 men) including justice officials, WCAO representatives, administrators, traditional leaders, SACCO members, and media professionals. The workshop featured traditional blessings, expert presentations on GBV trends, and panel discussions led by regional and federal representatives. Participants shared practical insights, discussed challenges, and reaffirmed their shared responsibility to safeguard women’s rights.

The key commitments emerged from the discussion were integrating gender-responsive budgeting across all Woredas, replicating the successful Women Watch Group/Forum model in new areas, and expanding advocacy and campaigns with the support of the Attorney General’s Office. This collective momentum marks a transformative shift, proving that real development begins when influential voices stand for justice.

By empowering traditional and formal leaders as allies, the region is building a powerful front against GBV. Through strengthened collaboration, accountability, and community-driven advocacy, South West and West Shoa Zones are charting a bold path toward a safer, more equitable future for women and girls.
